Asthma, pregnancy any link?

Monday, February 8th 2010 3:18 PM

Erbil, Feb. 8 (AKnews) - Maternal infection during pregnancy increases the risk of developing asthma in the child in the long run, a new study finds.

According to the study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, babies born to mothers with chorioamnionitis — inflammation of the placenta or amniotic fluid due to a number of bacterial infections of the vagina including E. coli and group B streptococci — and those born prematurely are more likely to develop asthma by the age of eight.

Chorioamnionitis accounts for more than half of all preterm births, a condition in which the lungs are not fully developed and therefore are more prone to early infection, inflammation and subsequently chronic lung disease such as asthma.

Scientists, therefore, concluded that bacterial infection is an independent risk factor for asthma in prematurely born children.

"Women sometimes tend to underestimate the importance of prenatal care and miss opportunities for finding this type of problem before it occurs," said lead researcher Darios Getahun, stressing that fighting chorioamnionitis can considerably lower the asthma risk.
