Tight security procedures in Baghdad near places of Eid celebrations
20/08/2012 15:30BAGHDAD, Aug. 20 (AKnews) - Iraqi police said Monday that Baghdad Operations put all military units on alert in the places of Eid celebration to avoid any attacks by militants, adding that hundreds of security members in civilian clothes have been deployed in the capital.
The security and defence committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives revealed last Friday that the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Nouri al-Maliki held a series of changes in security positions in Baghdad and the provinces after the recent security breaches.
According to informed security sources, al-Qaeda is trying to prove its existence, especially at the middle of Baghdad, through the selection of specific goals to carry out attacks that aim to kill large numbers of civilians.
A police source who asked not to be named said: "Security reinforcements were sent to all places of celebration in Baghdad at dawn today to double the security measures to prevent the occurrence of attacks.
"Security forces fear attacks implemented by suicide bombers and explosive belts that cannot be controlled."
At least 70 people were killed in a series of bombings and shootings in different parts of Iraq on Thursday.
The increasing violence in the country coincides with the severe political crisis in the country since the formation of the government headed by Nouri al-Maliki.
