ERBIL, Aug.28 (AKnews)- In seven months some 2,751 stray dogs were killed by the emergency teams of the General Directorate of Animal Resources and Veterinary, said directorate's media secretary.
Last week three children from Erbil died after being bitten by stray dogs.
Jan.1 through Aug.1 these stray dogs were killed in the Kurdistan Region: 1,458 in Suli, 800 in the disputed Garmiyan area, 453 in Erbil and 40 in Duhok, said Azad Khoshnaw.
The official said three teams from the General Directorate of Animal Resources and Veterinary have been formed to kill the dogs by feeding them drugs. Municipality police also uses taper rifles for killing the stray dogs.
Khoshnaw said controlling the stay dogs in essence is the responsibility of the municipality as it has to remove garbage which attracts the stray dogs to the residential areas, to fence the dumpsites and to remove the chicken slaughterhouses and sales to outside the residential areas.
