ERBIL, August 11 (AKnews) – Former Iraqi football and al-Shorta player Abas Raheem died in al-Yarmouk hospital following a traffic accident.

Raheem was one of the best Iraqi players of the 1990s. He was a midfielder and known for his high-speed and skills.

Raheem left Iraq’s team after an injury when he was 28.

Raheem was best recognized for his high performance in the match against Jordan in 1999 when Iraq was four goals down but later the team equalized in the last 20 minutes, according to Elaph.

The Jordan match was chosen as the second most spectacular match of that time after Manchester United's match against Bayern Munich in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, where Manchester scored two goals in the last two minutes.

After quitting football, Raheem practiced journalism for al-Muatin paper.
